The current IPL 2024 season has seen a lot of drama inside and outside the field. The latest incident involves Mumbai Indians (MI) and their captain Hardik Pandya, who were fined Rs 24 lakh for violating the IPL code of conduct related to over-rates.
The burden of fine fell on the shoulders of Pandya. As captain, he was responsible for ensuring that his team bowled its overs within the stipulated time. For this second offence, Pandya received a hefty fine of ₹24 lakh.
- Date of Incident: April 30th, 2024 (Match 48 of IPL 2024)
- Matchup: Lucknow Super Giants vs Mumbai Indians
- Offense: The Mumbai Indians, captained by Hardik Pandya, bowled their overs slowly during the match, violating the IPL’s minimum over-rate rule.
- Reason for Steeper Penalty: This was Mumbai Indians’ second offense for slow over-rate this season, making the penalties more severe.
Second Offense, Steeper Penalty
During their match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on 30 April, MI’s bowling fell short of the prescribed over-rate. This was not the first time for the Mumbai franchise, making the offense all the more serious. According to the IPL code of conduct, repeat violators face strict punishment.
The remaining members of the MI playing XI, including the likes of Rohit Sharma and others, weren’t spared either. They were each fined ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, whichever was lower. This adheres to the standard penalty structure for team over-rate offenses.
Maintaining the Pace of the Game
The over-rate rule exists to ensure the smooth flow of the game and to respect the time constraints of viewers and broadcasters. Slow bowling can hamper the momentum and drag the match unnecessarily
