Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri has announced his retirement from international football today, May 16, 2024. The news came as a surprise to many fans, although there have been recent whispers of a possible departure.

He holds the records for most appearances (150) and goals (94) for the Indian national team, which is unlikely to be surpassed any time soon. He has captained the Blue Tigers for many years, leading them to victory in the 2011, 2015 and 2021 SAFF Championships. He was also part of the team that won the AFC Challenge Cup in 2008.

Chhetri’s most memorable goal came against Thailand in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup group stage.
